ACU charter member Marc Babitz, MD, was named to a 24-member panel that will review and update the criteria used to define medically underserved areas and health professional shortage areas. Secretary of HHS Sebelius made the announcement.
Babitz thanked Dr. David N. Sundwall, Executive Director of the Utah Department of Health for nominating him and said, I have spent my varied career trying to improve health care services for medically underserved populations, as a clinician, manager, teacher, consultant and administrator. I plan to bring these experiences to bear on the important process of determining how to best identify health care shortage areas in our nation while focusing on the greater goal of improving health and eliminating disparities.”
The committee comprises 24 members representing programs that are most affected by these designations. Babitz is Director, Division of Family and Health Preparedness, Utah Department of Health in Salt Lake City, Utah, and a National Health Service Corps alumnus.
