Ricky ChoiCalifornia Pediatrician Speaks Out

By C. Dang-Vu

In this column, ACU features individual members who are making the case for health care reform in their communities.

Dr. Ricky Choi of Asian Health Services, a comprehensive community health center located in the health of Oakland’s Chinatown, attended Rep. Jackie Speier’s (D-CA) town hall meeting on health care reform. He asked if she would commit to a public plan option; she responded that she could not.

Undaunted, Choi served as a panelist at the Asian-American Pacific Islander Community Forum on Health Care Reform and spoke at a press conference on “Health Reform and Asian Americans” at the Asian and Pacific Islander American Health Forum. He spoke about the need for a public plan and in favor of allowing newly legal immigrants into federal programs and subsidies.

Choi published an editorial in the Korea Times about the effects of freezing the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) in California and has a forthcoming article in KoreAm Journal on the impact of health reform on Korean-Americans.

We applaud Choi’s advocacy work. If you, or a fellow ACU member, have been involved in the health care reform debate, we’d like to hear from you. Please e-mail Christine Dang-Vu to tell us your story.
