June 12 – The Association of Clinicians for the Underserved (ACU) has received $74,266 in AmeriCorps funding in the form of an Evidence Based Intervention Planning Grant from the Corporation for National Community Service (CNCS), a public-private partnership and the nation’s largest grant-maker supporting service and volunteering. The purpose of an AmeriCorps Planning Grant is to support the development of service programs so applicants are better prepared to compete for an AmeriCorps program grant the following year.
ACU was granted this one year grant to develop an AmeriCorps program serving in low-income medically underserved communities in the U.S. and its territories that will focus on the CNCS focus area of Healthy Futures. ACU proposes to partner with local safety net organizations to implement evidence-based “patient navigation assistance” to their patient populations. AmeriCorps members will be trained as patient “navigators” to provide patient centered interventions such as case management assistance with coverage enrollment, accessing primary care services, and awareness/effective utilization of health care resources across the respective individual’s continuum of care. Patient navigation assistance can help to identify maximum use of various clinical and non-clinical staff, contingent on their education and skill level, as patient navigators in a primary care setting.
We look forward to collaborating with member organizations during the Planning Grant period to shape the most effective intervention proposals for our full grant submission later this year.
