Good News: The Supreme Court Upholds the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act!

The Association of Clinicians for the Underserved (ACU) is very pleased that the Supreme Court has upheld the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. This is a great step for America’s health care system!

ACU Board Member and Co-Chair of  ACU’s Advocacy Committee, Sandra Leal, PharmD, FAPhA, CDE, said, ACU believes that access to health care is a basic human right. The Supreme Court decision today moves us closer to universal health care. It is a step in the right direction for the thousands of people who currently don’t have access.”

In addition, the other Co-Chair of ACU’s Advocacy Committee, Felix L. Nuñez, MD, MPH, said, “This decision by the Court represents more than just a political victory; it is an opportunity to begin to address the inequities, waste, and inefficiencies in the American health care system.  I hope that opponents of the legislation will take a closer look at what this means for both insured and uninsured Americans, and will work together with supporters of the Act to implement and improve it.”

Although the law is upheld, ACU recognizes that states now have the option to participate in the expansion of Medicaid. We would encourage that all states do the right thing to ensure that as many residents up to 133% of poverty, have access to care.
