National Networks for Tobacco Control and Prevention

While smoking  has declined overall among the United States population, rates are disproportionately higher among communities of color, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT), and low socioeconomic status populations (Low SES).

Since 2006, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Office on Smoking and Health (OSH) has funded the National Networks for Tobacco Control and Prevention to advance the science and practice of tobacco control in the United States for members of these priority populations.

The National Networks website has information, tools and resources including:

• Targeted information and resources for tobacco control organizations, community-based organizations, health care providers, and other tobacco control professionals
• Factsheets and reports on tobacco’s impact on priority populations
• Toolkits, case studies and guides on addressing tobacco related disparities

In the current five-year cycle (2008-2013), the National Networks includes:

• Asian Pacific Partners for Empowerment, Advocacy, and Leadership (APPEAL) PROMISE Network
• Break Free Alliance (Low SES)
• National African American Tobacco Prevention Network (NAATPN)
• National Latino Tobacco Control Network (NLTCN)
• National Native Network (NNN)
• The Network for LGBT Health Equity
