ACU Statement on Separation of Families at U.S. Border

June 22, 2018 – The Association of Clinicians for the Underserved finds that the policy of separation of undocumented immigrant children from their families at the Unites States-Mexico border is both unjust and unhealthy. In concert with our fellow association partners, we call for the permanent end to this policy, and the immediate reunification of the families separated to date. Many of our members care for immigrant & refugee families, who all too often fall into the category of underserved in our country. From this firsthand experience, we know that the separation of any child from their family, for other than for safety issues, is a tragedy and directly leads to immediate and long-term health consequences. We urge our government to end this policy and immediately and safely reunite these families.

ACU also supports the strong statements from our friends at the following national associations:

American Public Health Association & the Trust for America’s Health

American Academy of Family Physicians

Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs

American Academy of Pediatrics

American Psychological Association

National Association of Social Workers

National Nursing Coalition
