Beginning today — October 1 — uninsured people can shop online for health insurance. If they enroll by December 15, their coverage will begin on January 1, 2014.
The Health Insurance Marketplace for consumer is one of the most significant provisions of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Millions of currently uninsured people will gain access to affordable insurance, some of them with subsidies, through the marketplace. Information for consumers is available at healthcare.gov (English) or cuidadodesalud.gov/es (Spanish).
Health professionals and clinic staff can obtain materials to promote awareness in many languages at marketplace.cms.gov. Training is also available for those who wish to become a Certified Application Counselor.
ACU has long advocated for equal access for all. “While we have all heard the political arguments surrounding the ACA, I think we share the hope that people without insurance today can get the coverage and care they need as soon as possible,” said ACU Executive Director Craig Kennedy. “The ACA may not be perfect, but we hope it helps the millions of underserved people in this country today get the coverage and care they need.”
