On December 20, the President signed two spending bills that fund the federal government through September 30. Discretionary funding for Community Health Centers will remain at FY2019 levels while discretionary funding for the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) will increase from $105 million in FY2019 to $120 million in FY2020. The FY2020 Appropriations Legislation also extends mandatory funding for Community Health Centers and NHSC through May 22, 2020.
Founded by alumni and members of the NHSC, the Association of Clinicians for the Underserved applauds Congress for the additional investment into the primary care workforce. With 13,000 providers, and nearly 60% serving at health centers, these additional funds will help increase the number of providers choosing to deliver care in underserved communities. However, more work is needed. As a vital link to desperately needed health care services in low income and underserved communities, the NHSC must increase its field strength. ACU will continue to work with our many allies in Congress to stress the importance of financing these programs at levels that would ensure even greater access to high quality comprehensive care.
